Towels that need a second run are the classic sign. Restricted airflow keeps moist air in the drum and the dryer keeps working harder.
A dryer that heats the top panel and the laundry room is trapping heat it should be pushing outside. That heat is what ignites lint.
Lint near the heating element or motor is scorching. Stop the dryer and do not run it again until the vent has been cleared.
Visible buildup at the outlet means the inside of the duct is worse. A hood damper that never lifts means almost no air is getting out.
Moisture, musty odor or mildew on the walls near the dryer point to exhaust leaking inside instead of venting out.
Starlings love a warm, lint lined tube. A nest can block the vent completely in days, and the fix is cleaning plus a proper guard.
Once a year is the baseline. Large families, pet owners and homes with long or roof terminated runs usually need it more often.
