Why it matters
The fire safety numbers behind an annual fireplace service
A fireplace is the one appliance in the house that holds an open flame on purpose. These figures are why the standards call for yearly attention.
Heating equipment, right after cooking
NFPA data puts heating equipment, which includes fireplaces, chimneys and inserts, second only to cooking as a cause of home structure fires in the United States.
Source: NFPA, Home Heating Fires reportCreosote is the usual culprit
Failure to clean, mostly creosote in chimneys and flues, is the leading factor in home heating fires, contributing to roughly a quarter of them. Wood burners in Geauga and Portage county that run all winter build it fast.
Source: NFPA, Home Heating Fires reportGas fireplaces need checks too
At least 420 people in the United States die each year from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. A gas fireplace with a blocked vent, a cracked heat exchanger or a poorly adjusted burner is one of the sources. NFI certified technicians test for it.

Warning signs
Fireplace symptoms that should not wait for fall
Some of these are nuisances. Several are early warnings of a chimney fire or a gas problem.
Smoke rolls into the room
A wood fireplace that smokes has a draft problem: cold flue, closed or broken damper, blocked cap or a flue undersized for the opening.
Gas flame is yellow or lazy
A healthy gas fireplace burns mostly blue with yellow tips. A sooty yellow flame means incomplete combustion and possible carbon monoxide.
Pilot will not stay lit
Usually a weak thermocouple or thermopile, sometimes a dirty pilot assembly or a failing valve. Quick to diagnose with the right meter.
Cracked or crumbling firebrick
Gaps in the firebox let heat reach the framing behind it. Refractory panels in prefab units are the same story.
Water or rust in the firebox
Rain is coming down the flue or through the crown. Rust on a damper or a prefab firebox floor is the giveaway.
Shiny black glaze inside the flue
Third stage creosote, hard and tar like, is the most flammable form and cannot be brushed off. It needs a certified sweep with the right treatment.
Rotten egg or chemical odor
Gas odor near a fireplace means shut it off and call. A sharp campfire smell in summer is creosote drawing moisture.
Cold draft from a closed fireplace
A damper that no longer seals lets heated air out all winter. A top sealing damper fixes the draft and the energy loss.
How it works
How a fireplace service call goes
Book and describe the unit
Wood, gas or a prefab? Insert or open masonry? Tell us what it does, and we send the right technician with the right parts.
Protect the room and inspect
Drop cloths down, HEPA vacuum running. For wood units the flue camera goes up. For gas units we pull the glass and check the burner, pilot, valve and vent.
Clean and report
Creosote and soot come out, or the burner and logs get cleaned and reset. You see the footage and get a written report with any repairs priced firmly.
Repair or restore
Approved repairs are done the same visit when parts are on the van, otherwise scheduled quickly. Larger restorations get a written scope and timeline.
Inspections
Gain peace of mind with a Level 1 or Level 2 fireplace inspection
The National Fire Protection Association code NFPA 211 mandates an annual inspection for every chimney and venting system, regardless of how often it is used. Regular fires build creosote and soot in the flue, which must be cleaned. A fireplace that sits unused still needs its structure checked, especially through a Northeast Ohio winter. During a typical inspection we examine, clean and verify that the fireplace and chimney system is sized, installed correctly and safe to use.
Level 1 inspection
For a fireplace in regular use with no changes to the appliance or the venting. Readily accessible areas are checked for soundness, blockages and deposits. Advised for homeowners who maintain the system every year, and included with our sweeping service.
Level 2 inspection
Required when you buy or sell a home, change fuel type or appliance, after a chimney fire, storm or earthquake, or when the fireplace noticeably changes how it performs. We video scan the flue and inspect the cap, crown, flashing, masonry, flue liner, damper, appliance connections, smoke chamber and firebox for cracks, leaks and damage. Essential before a new liner, insert or gas log set goes in.
Interior camera inspection
A flue camera travels the full length of the chimney above the firebox and records cracked tiles, missing mortar joints, creosote glaze and blockages. You watch it live.
Exterior camera inspection
A drone pass over the crown, cap, flashing and brick, without ladders on a wet roof and without missing the back side of the chimney.

Why Green and Clean
Why gas and wood fireplace owners call us first
Most sweeps will not touch a gas unit. Most gas fireplace shops will not sweep a wood flue. Holding both CSIA and NFI certification means one visit covers whatever is in your house.
| What matters | Green and Clean | Typical coupon service |
|---|---|---|
| Wood fireplaces | CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, Level 2 camera inspections | Brush and a flashlight |
| Gas fireplaces | NFI Certified technician with combustion testing | Refer you to someone else |
| Proof | Flue video and written report you keep | Verbal summary, maybe a photo |
| Prefab units | Refractory panels, chase covers and listed parts for 1990s colonials | Not sure what a prefab is |
Why certification matters
Certified by CSIA, NFI, NCSG and CCP, and what that buys you
Hiring us as a Certified Chimney Professional, a trusted NCSG member, a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep and an NFI Certified technician means your fireplace is in the hands of people who studied for and passed extensive exams on inspection, maintenance, codes and standards for chimneys, fireplaces and venting systems. As an NCSG member our business was screened and approved.
Certification holders agree to a strict code of ethics that protects homeowners from scams; break it and the certification is revoked. We recertify every three years through examination or the NFI Continuing Education Program, because the industry keeps changing. These credentials are recognized by insurance underwriters, building officials and local, state and federal agencies, and they carry the knowledge needed to properly plan and install hearth products and their venting systems. Builders and officials come to us with questions about the installation and operation of hearth products.
- Trained in heat transfer, efficiency, codes and standards, venting systems and troubleshooting
- Factory built fireplaces, inserts and wood stoves, house pressure tests, tools and instruments
- Regulated by the Indiana State Workforce Innovation Council, Office for Career and Technical Schools, and recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency
- Building code officials prefer to work with a certified company, because they know certified professionals prepared for and passed an industry exam
- Every certification is verifiable online, click any badge

Pricing
What changes the price of fireplace services
Fireplace work ranges from a quick gas tune up to a full firebox rebuild. The inspection tells us where you land, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.
Fuel type and unit
A gas tune up is a shorter visit than a wood fireplace sweep with a Level 2 camera inspection. Prefab units and inserts add access steps.
What the inspection finds
A clean flue and sound firebox means inspection only. Glazed creosote, cracked panels or a failed damper add parts and time.
Restoration scope
Repointing a few firebox joints is minor. Rebuilding a firebox or restoring a stone facade is a multi day project priced on a written scope.

Smell gas, see smoke where it should not be, or hear a roar in the chimney?
Shut the unit down, get everyone out if you smell gas, and call the emergency line. It is answered 24/7 and active hazards go to the front of the route.

FAQ
Fireplace questions we answer most
How often should a fireplace be serviced?
Once a year for both gas and wood, per NFPA 211, ideally in late summer before the season. Wood burners that run daily may need a mid season sweep as well.
Do gas fireplaces really need an annual inspection?
Yes. Gas units collect dust on the burner, gaskets dry out, vents get blocked by nests and thermopiles weaken. The annual visit catches carbon monoxide risks and keeps the unit lighting on the first try in January.
Can you fix a gas fireplace that will not light?
Almost always. Common causes are a failed thermocouple or thermopile, a dirty pilot, a stuck valve or a dead remote receiver. Our NFI certified technicians carry the parts for most brands.
What is the difference between fireplace services and a chimney inspection?
In practice they overlap. Fireplace work focuses on the firebox, damper, smoke chamber and the appliance itself. A chimney inspection covers the flue and the exterior structure. Our Level 2 inspection covers all of it on camera.
Can you convert my wood burning fireplace to gas?
Yes. We evaluate the flue and firebox, size a log set or insert, coordinate the gas connection with a licensed plumber where required and vent it correctly. We handle the whole conversion and make sure it complies with local codes and regulations. A Level 2 inspection comes first.
How do I know if my fireplace needs repair?
Common warning signs are cracked or deteriorating mortar, damaged bricks, water leaks, a damaged flue or damper, smoke entering the home and unusual odors. A professional fireplace and chimney inspection identifies the problem before it becomes serious or a safety concern.
Is fireplace cleaning messy?
Not the way we do it. The opening is sealed, a HEPA vacuum runs the whole time, and drop cloths cover the hearth and floor. Most customers cannot tell we were there except for the clean firebox.
