“David promptly responded to our request for inspection, called when he was en route, and arrived on time. He used a drone to examine the chimney exterior and a camera for the interior, provided a copy of the inspection video, and presented a range of options for prioritizing the repairs. Excellent value, highly recommend!”

What is included
Chimney cap installation done right the first time
The cap is the cheapest part of the chimney and it protects everything below it. Here is what our installation includes.
- Flue measurement: inside and outside dimensions of every flue tile, crown size, and clearance for a damper if you want one
- Material choice: stainless steel as standard, copper on request, never galvanized steel that rusts and streaks the brick
- Correct mesh: spark arrestor screen sized to keep animals out without choking the draft
- Multi flue caps: one custom fabricated cover for chimneys with two or three flues, anchored to the crown rather than to the tiles
- Top mounted dampers: a cap and damper in one unit with a silicone gasket, operated by a cable at the firebox
- Animal proofing: screening against chimney swifts, squirrels and raccoons, after any current residents have moved out
- Crown check: we confirm the crown can hold the anchors, because a cap bolted to crumbling concrete leaves in the first January gale

Why it matters
Why an open flue is the most expensive hole in your house
Rain, animals and lost heat all use the same opening. Building code, CSIA and federal wildlife law each weigh in.
Screen sizing rule
The residential code requires a spark arrestor screen with a net free area at least four times the flue outlet and openings between three eighths and one half inch. Smaller mesh clogs with creosote. Larger mesh lets squirrels in.

Your flue is open every day of the year, and most Cleveland fireplaces burn on a handful of winter weekends. CSIA calls the cap the least expensive step a homeowner can take against water damage.
Source: Chimney Safety Institute of AmericaChimney swifts are protected
Chimney swifts nest in open Ohio flues and are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Once they move in, nobody may remove them until the young fledge in late summer. A cap installed in spring avoids the problem.

Eight signs you need a chimney cap, or a better one
Most of these show up long before the ceiling stains do.
Rain sounds in the firebox
Drips hitting the damper or smoke shelf during a storm mean an open flue or a cap that has lost its lid.
Rust streaks down the brick
Orange stains fanning out below the cap mean galvanized steel is corroding. The brick is absorbing the runoff.
Scratching or chirping
Squirrels, raccoons and chimney swifts move into open flues every spring. The sound comes from the smoke shelf or just above the damper.
Smoke backing into the room
A screen packed with creosote or leaves can restrict the flue enough to push smoke into the living room on a still day.
Cold draft when the fireplace is off
A throat damper that no longer seals lets heated air pour up the flue all winter. A top mounted damper closes that gap.
Cap sitting crooked or missing
Lake winds lift caps that were only friction fitted or screwed into soft mortar. Look up after every big storm.
Leaves and twigs in the firebox
Debris on the grate means the flue is open to the sky. What falls in dry can also block the flue or catch a spark.
Cracked flue tile at the top
An uncovered flue takes rain and ice directly. The top tiles crack first, and the damage works its way down.
How it works
Measured, matched and installed, often in one visit
Measure and photograph
We measure each flue and the crown, check the damper, and photograph the top so you can see what is there now. Standard caps often go on during the same visit.
Choose the cap
Single flue, multi flue, custom fabricated, or cap plus top mounted damper. We explain the trade offs and give you a written price.
Install and seal
Anchors set into solid crown or tile, stainless fasteners, and high temperature sealant where the design calls for it. Nothing is glued to loose mortar.
Test the draft
We open the damper, run a smoke test and confirm the flue pulls cleanly through the new screen.

Why Green and Clean
A chimney company installs caps differently than a handyman
Anyone can buy a cap at the hardware store. Sizing it, anchoring it and matching it to your damper and crown is where the job goes wrong.
| What matters | Green and Clean | Typical coupon service |
|---|---|---|
| Sizing | Measured to the tile, custom built when needed | Nearest size off the shelf, gaps stuffed with sealant |
| Material | Stainless steel or copper | Galvanized steel that rusts in a few winters |
| Anchoring | Into solid crown or tile with stainless hardware | Screws into old mortar, or friction only |
| Credentials | CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, licensed and insured in Ohio | Often no chimney training |
Pricing
What changes the price of chimney caps
The cap itself is a small part of the cost. Fit and access are what move the number, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.
Standard or custom
A single flue stainless cap in a common size is quick. A custom multi flue cover or copper cap is built to your measurements and priced by size.
Top mounted damper
A damper cap costs more than a plain cap and pays back in heated air that stops leaving up the flue while the fireplace sits idle.
Roof access
A steep slate roof in Cleveland Heights takes more staging than a walkable ranch roof in Mentor. Height and pitch are part of the estimate.

Animal in the chimney right now?
Call the emergency line. We remove what the law allows, screen the flue so nothing gets into the house, and come back for the permanent cap when the coast is clear.

FAQ
Chimney cap questions, answered straight
Does every chimney need a cap?
Yes. CSIA treats the cap as standard equipment on a masonry chimney because it keeps water, animals and debris out and stops embers from landing on the roof. Gas appliance flues need one too, sized so the vent still drafts.
What is a multi flue chimney cap?
Many Cleveland homes have one chimney serving two or three flues, for example a fireplace and a furnace. A multi flue cap is one custom fabricated cover that spans the whole crown, screened on all sides and anchored to the crown rather than to each tile. It also shields the crown surface.
Stainless steel or copper?
Stainless steel is the standard because it does not rust and the price is reasonable. Copper is chosen for looks on historic homes and develops a green patina. We do not install galvanized caps because they corrode within a few winters and stain the brick.
What is a top mounted damper and is it worth it?
A cap and damper in one unit that seals the top of the flue with a gasket, closed by a cable at the firebox. Old throat dampers are cast iron plates that never seal, so warm air leaves all winter. It usually earns back its cost in heat you stop losing.
How much do chimney caps cost to install?
Price depends on the size and material of the cap, whether it is custom fabricated, whether a top mounted damper is included, and what the crown looks like when we get up there. We quote in writing after measuring, and the estimate is free.
There are birds in my chimney. Can you cap it now?
If they are chimney swifts, federal law protects the nest until the young leave, usually by late summer. We can confirm what you have, screen the fireplace opening so nothing gets into the house, and install the cap as soon as the flue is empty.
