“David promptly responded to our request for inspection, called when he was en route, and arrived on time. He used a drone to examine the chimney exterior and a camera for the interior, provided a copy of the inspection video, and presented a range of options for prioritizing the repairs. Excellent value, highly recommend!”

What is included
Fireplace repairs we perform every week
A fireplace has more failure points than most homeowners realize. These are the repairs we carry parts and materials for on the truck.
- Firebox brick repair: loose or cracked firebrick replaced and joints repointed with refractory mortar, never standard masonry mix
- Refractory panel replacement in factory built fireplaces, matched to the make and model so the listing stays valid
- Damper repair or replacement: rusted throat dampers freed or swapped, top sealing dampers installed at the flue top
- Smoke chamber parging to smooth the corbelled brick that causes turbulence and smoke spillage
- Hearth and hearth extension: cracked tile, loose stone and gaps at the firebox edge repaired to code clearances
- Smoke problem diagnosis: draft, sizing, house pressure and flue issues traced to the real cause
- Gas fireplace components: pilot assemblies, thermocouples, thermopiles, valves and log sets
- Lintel, ash dump and cleanout door repairs on older Cleveland masonry fireplaces

Why it matters
Why a cracked firebox is not cosmetic
The firebox is the only barrier between an 800 degree fire and the wood framing of your house. Small failures there are how fires reach the walls.
Heating equipment and home fires
NFPA ranks heating equipment as the second leading cause of home fires in the United States. Fireplaces and chimneys account for a large share of those incidents.
Source: NFPA, Home Heating Fires reportThe mortar joint limit
The International Residential Code limits firebrick joints to a quarter inch and requires refractory mortar. Joints that have opened wider let heat reach the outer masonry.
Source: International Residential Code R1001.5Damage that starts in the firebox
CSIA cites roughly 25,000 chimney fires a year in the U.S. A single event can crack firebrick and warp a damper, which is why NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 inspection afterward.

Eight signs your fireplace needs repair
Look at the firebox with a flashlight while it is cold. Any of these means stop burning until a technician has seen it.
Cracked or crumbling firebrick
Hairline cracks are normal wear. Bricks split through, spalling faces or pieces on the floor are not.
Sand on the hearth
Gritty mortar dust means joints are washing out. Freeze and thaw cycles off Lake Erie accelerate it in fireboxes with any moisture intrusion.
Cracked refractory panels
In a prefab unit, a crack you can fit a nickel into or a panel worn through to the steel means replacement, not patching.
Damper that fights you
Rust, warping and creosote make throat dampers stick. A damper that will not seal is heat loss all winter and a draft path for cold air.
Smoke in the room
Spillage at startup or every time the furnace kicks on points to a sizing, pressure or smoke chamber problem worth diagnosing properly.
Rust or water in the firebox
Water running down the flue rusts dampers and dissolves mortar. The fix is usually a cap or crown, then the firebox repair.
Gas unit acting up
Pilot outages, delayed ignition with a whoomp, soot on the logs or a lazy yellow flame all point to components that need service.
Hot wall beside the fireplace
Drywall or trim that gets warm during a fire means heat is escaping the firebox. Stop using the fireplace and call.
How it works
From diagnosis to the first test fire
Camera diagnosis
We inspect the firebox, smoke chamber and flue on camera and check the exterior. Many firebox problems start with water from above.
Written scope with photos
You get a repair plan that shows what we saw and lists exactly what will be done, with a firm price. No pressure to decide on the spot.
The repair
Firebrick and refractory mortar for masonry units, factory panels for prefab units, new components for gas. Drop cloths and HEPA filtration keep the room clean.
Cure time and test
Refractory mortar needs curing and a few small break in fires. We explain the schedule and test gas components before we leave.

Pricing
What changes the price of fireplace repair
Fireplace repair ranges from a one hour repoint to a full firebox rebuild. These are the factors that set the number, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.
Masonry or factory built
Masonry fireboxes are repaired brick by brick. Factory built units need model specific refractory panels, and some older models are out of production.
Extent of the damage
Repointing a few joints is quick. Replacing the back wall or rebuilding the firebox to its original dimensions takes days and curing time.
Related parts
A new damper, smoke chamber parging or a gas valve can be added to the same visit. Each is listed separately so you can choose.

FAQ
Questions we hear most
Can I keep using a fireplace with cracked firebrick?
Hairline surface cracks are usually fine. Bricks that are split through, loose or missing pieces, or joints you can push a coin into should be repaired first. Heat reaching the framing behind the firebox is how house fires start.
Do you replace refractory panels in prefab fireplaces?
Yes. Factory built units from the 1980s and 1990s are common in Northeast Ohio colonials, and their panels crack with age. We identify the model from the data plate, order matching panels and install them so the unit keeps its listing.
Why does my fireplace smoke when the furnace runs?
Your furnace, bath fans and range hood pull air out of the house, and a tight home makes it up through the easiest path, often the chimney. We test house pressure, check flue sizing and smoke chamber shape, and recommend the fix that actually applies.
Is a top sealing damper better than a throat damper?
For most homes, yes. It seals with a gasket at the top of the flue, keeps rain and animals out and closes off cold air far better than a warped cast iron throat damper.
How long does the repair take?
Damper swaps and small repoints finish in a visit. Panel replacement depends on parts availability. A firebox rebuild takes a few days plus curing time before break in fires. We tell you the schedule in the written estimate.
What does fireplace repair cost?
It depends on whether the unit is masonry or factory built, how far the damage has spread and which related parts you choose to address. Estimates are free and written. Book online or call and we will look at your fireplace on camera first.
