“David promptly responded to our request for inspection, called when he was en route, and arrived on time. He used a drone to examine the chimney exterior and a camera for the interior, provided a copy of the inspection video, and presented a range of options for prioritizing the repairs. What is included

What chimney relining with Green and Clean includes

The liner is the part of the chimney that actually carries smoke and exhaust out of the house. When clay tile fails, the masonry around it is one crack from hot gas. Relining restores a continuous, sealed path from appliance to cap.

  • Level 2 camera inspection first: the full flue recorded so the decision is based on footage, not a sales pitch
  • Liner sizing: diameter matched to the appliance outlet and the venting table, because an oversized flue condenses and an undersized one smokes
  • Alloy selection: 316Ti or 304 stainless chosen for the fuel you burn, from a UL 1777 listed system
  • Insulation: ceramic blanket wrap or poured insulation to keep flue gas hot and heat off the masonry
  • Connections and termination: tee or adapter at the appliance, top plate, storm collar and a matching stainless cap
  • Tile removal when needed: broken or offset clay tiles broken out so the liner fits without kinks
  • After scan and documentation: video of the installed liner and photos of every connection

Why it matters

A failed liner is a fire and carbon monoxide problem, not a cosmetic one

The liner keeps flue gas, acids and sparks away from framing that sits inches behind the brick. Cracked, that protection is gone.

2inches

Clearance to framing

NFPA 211 requires two inches of air space between an interior masonry chimney and combustible framing. In many older Northeast Ohio homes the joists touch the brick, so a sound liner is the only barrier left.

The liner test

UL 1777 is the standard stainless steel chimney liners are tested to, including 2,100 degree chimney fire temperatures. A modern liner is built to survive that and clay tile is not.

Heating equipment fires

NFPA reports that heating equipment is involved in about one in seven home fires. A continuous, correctly sized liner is one of the few upgrades that changes those odds.

Warning signs

Signs your chimney needs a new liner

Some of these show up on the camera only. Others you can spot from the hearth or the basement.

Clay tile pieces in the firebox

Orange shards on the smoke shelf or the grate mean tiles have cracked and let go. The flue is no longer continuous.

The scan shows gaps or cracks

Open mortar joints between tiles, spalled tile faces or vertical cracks on video are the standard reasons to reline.

New stove, insert or furnace

A wood insert or a high efficiency furnace needs a flue sized to it. The old fireplace flue is almost always too big, which breeds condensation and creosote.

Damp brick on a furnace chimney

An oversized flue lets gas appliance exhaust cool and condense inside the chimney. The acidic water eats mortar from the inside out.

There was a chimney fire

Even a brief one can shatter tiles from thermal shock. A Level 2 scan after a fire usually ends in a relining conversation.

Unlined chimney in an older home

Many Cleveland, Lakewood and Elyria houses from the 1920s were built with no clay liner at all. Those chimneys were never meant for today's appliances.

Smoke smell in rooms away from the fireplace

Gaps in the liner let smoke and gases leak through the masonry into bedrooms and closets that share the wall.

An inspection report that says failed liner

Home inspectors flag it, and insurers and buyers take it seriously. A reline resolves it with paperwork to match.

How it works

How chimney relining works

01

Scan and size

A Level 2 camera inspection maps the damage. The technician measures the flue, offsets and appliance outlet and picks the diameter, alloy and insulation.

02

Prep the flue

The flue is swept clean. Broken or shifted tiles are removed where they would pinch the liner, and the smoke chamber is prepared for the connection.

03

Install

The liner is lowered from the top with insulation around it, connected to the appliance with a tee or adapter, and finished with a top plate, storm collar and cap.

04

Prove it

A final camera pass confirms the liner is continuous and undamaged. You receive the footage, photos of each connection and the product listing.

Why Green and Clean

Why relining belongs with a certified sweep

A liner is only as good as its sizing, insulation and connections. Those are the three things a rushed crew gets wrong, and none are visible once the cap goes on.

  • Sized to the appliance: we read the venting tables, not just the old flue dimension
  • CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep and NFI Certified: trained on venting codes and appliance installation
  • 15,000+ jobs since 2016, 4.9 stars on Google, BBB A+ accredited

Pricing

What changes the price of chimney relining

Relining estimates come down to the liner, the insulation and what it takes to get it in cleanly. Here is what moves the number, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.

Length and diameter

A 15 foot ranch chimney in Wickliffe and a 40 foot flue in a three story Lakewood home need very different amounts of liner. Diameter follows the appliance, not preference.

Alloy and insulation

Heavier gauge 316Ti liners for wood and coal cost more than gas rated liners. Insulation wrap or a poured mix adds material and a step, and is standard for solid fuel.

Prep and access

Removing broken tile, working around offsets in an old chimney, pulling an insert or a chimney with no cleanout adds labor. All of it is itemized.

Furnace technician red tagged the flue?

When a gas appliance cannot vent safely, the house cannot wait for spring. Call the emergency line and we will scan the flue, size a liner and get heat back on as fast as parts allow. Available 24/7.

FAQ

Chimney relining questions

How long does an aluminum or stainless steel chimney liner last?

It depends on the alloy, the fuel and whether it is kept clean. A properly installed 316Ti liner that is swept annually can serve for decades. One left glazed with creosote or hit by a chimney fire ages much faster.

Do I really need insulation around the liner?

For wood, coal and oil, yes. Insulation keeps flue gas hot so the chimney draws well and deposits less creosote, and keeps heat off the brick and framing. Many liner listings require it for the zero clearance rating.

Can you reline a furnace or water heater flue?

Yes, and it is one of our most common jobs in older Cleveland suburbs. When a new furnace or water heater vents into an oversized masonry flue, condensation ruins the chimney. A correctly sized liner solves it.

HeatShield or a new liner?

HeatShield repairs a clay liner that is structurally sound but has gaps or minor cracks. A new aluminum or stainless steel liner replaces one that is broken, missing or the wrong size. The camera scan tells us which fits, and we offer both.

Will chimney relining stop my leak?

No. A liner handles smoke and exhaust, not rain. Leaks come from the crown, flashing, cap or brick, and those are separate repairs we can do on the same visit.

How long does the installation take?

Most single flue jobs are done in one day, including the final scan. Tile removal, long offsets or a two flue chimney can stretch to a second day. The estimate states the schedule up front.
