“David promptly responded to our request for inspection, called when he was en route, and arrived on time. He used a drone to examine the chimney exterior and a camera for the interior, provided a copy of the inspection video, and presented a range of options for prioritizing the repairs. Excellent value, highly recommend!”

What is included
What HeatShield chimney liner repair includes
HeatShield is a family of three flue repair systems built on cerfractory technology, a ceramic and refractory blend that bonds to clay tile and takes flue temperatures. Which one you need depends on what the camera shows.
- Level 2 video scan: every joint and tile recorded so the plan is based on the actual flue
- Flue cleaning: creosote and loose material removed so the sealant bonds to clean tile
- Joint Repair System: gaps in the mortar joints between tiles filled with cerfractory sealant by a custom foam plug
- Resurfacing System: the whole flue interior coated with a new cerfractory layer when tiles are eroded or lightly cracked
- CeCure Sleeve: a sealant saturated ceramic fabric sleeve bonded to the flue for tiles with structural cracks, UL 1777 listed
- Final scan and record: video of the finished flue and a written report for an inspector or buyer

Why it matters
Why gaps in a clay liner matter
Clay tile liners were the Northeast Ohio standard for most of the twentieth century. They do fine until the mortar between them washes out or a hot fire cracks them, and then the flue is open to the wall.
Intact or nothing
NFPA 211 requires a flue liner to be continuous and free of cracks, gaps and open joints before the chimney is used. A single missing mortar joint is enough to fail an inspection.
Source: NFPA 211One fire cracks clay
CSIA explains that clay tile cannot absorb rapid heat rise evenly, so a single chimney fire can crack tiles through thermal shock. Many flues we repair have one old fire in their history.
Source: Chimney Safety Institute of AmericaSame standard as steel
The HeatShield CeCure Sleeve relining system is listed to UL 1777, the standard applied to stainless steel liners. That listing is what building officials and insurers want.

Signs your flue is a HeatShield candidate
HeatShield is the fix for one kind of damage: a clay liner that is mostly intact but no longer sealed. Here is how it shows up.
Missing mortar between tiles
On camera, dark horizontal lines every two feet are open joints where mortar washed out. This is the classic Joint Repair job.
Hairline cracks in the tile
Fine cracks that have not shifted the tile are sealed by Resurfacing or bridged by a CeCure Sleeve, depending on depth.
Smoke odor in an upstairs bedroom
Smoke reaching another room is escaping the flue through gaps and moving through the chase. Sealing the joints closes that path.
Soot stains on exterior brick or in the attic
Black streaks bleeding through mortar joints outside or in the attic mean flue gases are getting past the liner.
A chimney fire in the past
After a fire, tiles crack from thermal shock but often stay in place. If the structure is sound, a sleeve restores the flue without rebuilding.
Inspector wrote gaps in liner on the report
One of the most common lines in a Level 2 report at a Cleveland area home sale. HeatShield turns it into a repaired, documented flue quickly.
Fireplace that smokes more than it used to
Gaps and rough joints disturb the draft. Restoring a smooth, sealed flue surface often brings the draw back.
Bits of mortar on the smoke shelf
Sandy debris behind the damper is joint mortar falling out from between the flue tiles above.
How it works
How HeatShield chimney liner repair works
Scan and measure
A Level 2 camera inspection records the flue. The technician measures the flue, marks each joint or crack and confirms the chimney is structurally sound.
Clean and prepare
The flue is swept and any glaze is removed. Clean tile is what the cerfractory sealant bonds to, so this step is not rushed.
Apply
A custom foam plug is lowered below the damage and drawn up on a winch, pressing sealant into each joint or laying down a resurfacing coat. For a CeCure Sleeve, the plug presses the sleeve to the tile.
Cure and verify
After the sealant cures, a second camera pass confirms every joint is filled and the surface is continuous. You receive before and after footage and the written report.

Why Green and Clean
Why choose a HeatShield certified crew
HeatShield is applied blind, inside a flue nobody can see without a camera. Certification, patience and documentation are the difference between a repair and a coating that flakes off in two seasons.
- HeatShield certified, plus CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep and Certified Chimney Professional
- Both options in house: HeatShield and stainless steel relining, so the recommendation follows the flue, not the truck
- Since 2016: 15,000+ jobs, BBB A+ accredited, background checked technicians

Pricing
What changes the price of HeatShield chimney liner repair
Three things decide the estimate, none of them a mystery once the camera has been up the flue, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.
Which system
Joint Repair on a few open joints is the lightest job. Resurfacing coats the full flue and uses more material. A CeCure Sleeve is a full relining system and is priced like one.
Flue length and condition
A 20 foot flue with light soot and a 35 foot flue with glaze that must come off first are different days. Cleaning and prep are their own line.
Access and appliance
Pulling a wood stove insert, working around a sharp offset or a chimney with no roof access adds labor. Multi flue chimneys are priced per flue.

FAQ
HeatShield questions homeowners ask
What exactly is HeatShield?
A cerfractory flue sealant, a blend of ceramic and refractory materials, applied from inside the flue to fill joints, resurface tile or bond a repair sleeve. It restores a clay liner without tearing out the chimney or downsizing the flue.
HeatShield or a new aluminum or stainless steel liner, which is better?
Neither wins every case. HeatShield suits a sound clay liner with gaps or minor cracks and keeps the full flue size. Stainless steel is the answer when tiles are broken or missing or the flue is the wrong size for the appliance. We install both and let the camera decide.
How long does the repair take?
Most Joint Repair and Resurfacing jobs are finished in a single visit. The sealant needs a cure period before the first fire, and the technician gives you that timing in writing with the after scan.
Does HeatShield work on gas and furnace flues?
Yes, when the clay liner is sound and the flue size suits the appliance. Oversized flues on gas furnaces usually do better with a correctly sized stainless liner, and we tell you which case you have.
Is HeatShield chimney liner repair accepted by inspectors and insurers?
Yes. The CeCure Sleeve is listed to UL 1777, and every job comes with before and after video and a written report. Cleveland area home inspectors and adjusters see our reports regularly.
Can HeatShield fix a flue after a chimney fire?
Often. If the tiles cracked but the structure is sound, a CeCure Sleeve or resurfacing can restore a continuous flue. If tiles have shifted or collapsed, stainless steel is the honest answer, and the scan shows which.
