What is included
Most masonry companies do walls, and most chimney companies do flues. We do the brick and stone on the whole house, and we hold the chimney certifications that most masons do not.
Why it matters
Brick lasts a century. Mortar does not, and water is the reason. Three numbers explain most of the masonry repair we do.
Water expands about nine percent as it turns to ice. When it soaks into a porous joint or a cracked brick and freezes, it pries the masonry apart. Lakeshore towns from Lorain to Painesville cycle through that dozens of times each winter.

Walk the outside of the house after the next hard rain and look for these.
Run a key along a joint. If it powders or the joint sits well back from the brick face, the wall is taking on water.
Efflorescence is mineral salt carried out by water moving through the wall. It is a moisture report, not a cosmetic issue.
Spalling is freeze damage. Once the hard fired face is gone the soft core soaks up water and the next brick follows.
A staircase pattern through block joints signals movement or water pressure. Small ones are repairable. Wide ones need attention now.
The top courses take the worst weather. Loose bricks up there are a falling hazard and a sign the crown has failed.
Front steps that shift underfoot have lost their mortar bed or their base. That is a trip hazard and a liability.
Open joints around frames let water run into the wall. Sealing and repointing them is quick when it is caught early.
Each freeze and thaw cycle opens cracks a little wider. If it looked smaller last year, it will look bigger next year.

We source matching brick, often reclaimed for older Cleveland homes, and mix mortar to match the original in color, joint profile and strength.
Joints are ground and repacked, units are cut out and replaced, or sections are rebuilt on a clean base. Roofs and landscaping are protected and the site is cleaned daily.
New mortar cures, waterproofing goes on when the wall is ready, and you get after photos with notes on anything worth watching.

Why Green and Clean
A mason who only does walls will often patch a chimney without understanding what is happening inside the flue. A sweep who does not do masonry will refer you out. We hold the chimney certifications and do the masonry, so nothing falls between the two.

Masonry pricing comes down to access, extent and materials. The inspection settles all three, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.
Ground level steps are simple. A chimney above a steep slate roof in Cleveland Heights needs staging and more time.
Spot tuckpointing a few joints versus regrinding a whole elevation. Replacing ten bricks versus rebuilding from the roofline.
Common modern brick is easy to find. Century old sand molded brick or Berea sandstone takes sourcing, and sometimes cutting units to match.

FAQ
Yes. Steps, porches, retaining walls, foundation block, window sills and lintels are regular work for us. The chimney certifications are a bonus when the job includes one.
Done correctly with mortar matched to the brick, a repointed wall should go decades before it needs attention. Done with mortar that is too hard, it can start spalling the brick within a few winters. That is the most common mistake we fix.
Usually. Northeast Ohio has good sources of reclaimed brick from the same era as most Cleveland housing stock, and we tint mortar to match weathered joints rather than leaving bright new lines.
Mortar needs temperatures above about 40 degrees to cure properly, so most exterior masonry services run April through November. In cold months we use heated enclosures for urgent repairs and schedule the rest for spring.
Not the kind we use. Siloxane based sealers are vapor permeable, so water vapor from inside the wall escapes while rain beads off. Film forming clear coats are the ones that trap water and cause spalling.
Yes, and we include it. The camera shows if the flue liner survived, which decides if the job is a masonry rebuild alone or a rebuild plus relining. Doing both at once saves a second mobilization.
