“David promptly responded to our request for inspection, called when he was en route, and arrived on time. He used a drone to examine the chimney exterior and a camera for the interior, provided a copy of the inspection video, and presented a range of options for prioritizing the repairs. Excellent value, highly recommend!”

What is included
What a professional chimney sweep covers
A chimney sweep is more than a brush on a rope. Our visit follows the NFPA 211 Level 1 checklist, so the flue gets cleaned and the whole system gets trained eyes.
- Full flue sweep: rotary or manual rods sized to your flue, firebox to cap
- Smoke chamber and smoke shelf: the two spots where creosote hides and most sweeps skip
- Flue camera scan: the interior recorded tile by tile, with the video sent to you
- Level 1 or 2 inspection: readily accessible parts of the chimney and connected appliance, per NFPA 211
- Dust control: drop cloths, sealed opening and a HEPA vacuum running the whole time
- Written report: photos, video and a plain English summary the same day

Why it matters
Creosote does not care how nice the fire looked
Every wood fire leaves a tarry residue in the flue. In a Lake Erie winter the fireplace runs for months and that residue builds fast.
The sweep threshold
CSIA advises sweeping an open masonry fireplace at an eighth of an inch of sooty buildup, sooner if any glaze is present. Most wood burning homes in Lake and Geauga counties hit that mark every season.
Source: Chimney Safety Institute of AmericaThe heat of a chimney fire
Ignited creosote burns at around 2,000 degrees, hot enough to crack clay tile liners and reach the framing inches from the chimney.
Source: Chimney Safety Institute of AmericaThe annual standard
NFPA 211 calls for chimneys, fireplaces and vents to be inspected at least once a year and cleaned when deposits are found. Even a rarely used flue collects nests and debris.

Signs your chimney needs a sweep now
No ladder needed to spot these. If two or more sound familiar, book before you light another fire.
Campfire smell in July
Humid summer air pulls odor out of creosote. A strong smoky smell with no fire burning means plenty of fuel is sitting in the flue.
Smoke rolls into the room
A partially blocked flue or a dirty smoke chamber cuts the draft. Smoke takes the easy way out, which is your living room.
Black flakes in the firebox
Crunchy or tar like pieces falling onto the grate are creosote shedding off the flue walls. That is stage 2 buildup at minimum.
Shiny black glaze on the damper
Look up with a flashlight. A hard, glossy coating is stage 3 creosote. It will not brush off and it burns hotter than anything else.
You cannot name the last sweep
If the answer is a shrug, the flue has probably gone several seasons. Annual service is the standard no matter how few fires you burned.
You just moved in
Sellers rarely sweep before closing. Treat the fireplace as unknown until a certified sweep has cleaned it and put a camera down the flue.
Fires that are slow to catch
A narrowed flue cannot pull air through the firebox. If kindling sulks and smoke lingers, buildup is choking the draft.
Birds or animals in the flue
Nesting material is dry fuel and a blockage at the same time. It has to come out before the first fire of the season.
How it works
The visit, start to finish
Book and prepare
Pick a two hour window, seven days a week. Skip fires for 24 hours before so the firebox is cold. We bring the covers and cloths.
Seal and sweep
The opening is sealed and a HEPA vacuum runs throughout. Rods and the right brush head travel the full flue, then the smoke chamber and firebox are cleaned.
Camera scan
A flue camera records the cleaned interior tile by tile. Cracked tiles, open mortar joints and leftover glaze show up on the screen while you watch.
Report and plan
You get photos, video and a written summary before the van leaves. Any repairs are listed with a firm written price and no pressure to decide on the spot.

- Proof on video: every recommendation is tied to footage you keep

Pricing
What changes the price of a chimney sweep
A clean gas flue in a Mentor ranch and a glazed wood flue in a three story Cleveland Heights double are different jobs. Three things move the estimate, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.
Flue type and count
An open fireplace, a wood stove insert, a prefab unit and a furnace flue each need different tools and time. Multiple flues are priced per flue.
Level of buildup
Loose soot brushes out in an hour. Stage 3 glaze needs rotary chains, sometimes a chemical treatment and a return visit. The camera tells us which before we quote.
Access and extras
Steep roofs, tall chimneys, a nest behind the damper or a cap that must come off add labor. Each is listed separately on the estimate.

Smoke in the room or a roaring sound in the flue?
Put the fire out, get everyone outside and call. A chimney fire is an emergency, and even a near miss deserves a camera scan before the next fire. The line is answered around the clock, with same day visits across Lake and Cuyahoga counties.

FAQ
Chimney sweep questions from Cleveland homeowners
How often should I have my chimney swept in Northeast Ohio?
Inspect every year and sweep whenever the technician finds an eighth of an inch of buildup. For a household that burns a few nights a week from November through March, that is once a season. Gas fireplaces still need the annual inspection because tiles crack and birds nest regardless of fuel.
What is the difference between a chimney sweep and a chimney cleaning?
People use the words interchangeably. This page covers the flue brushing plus the camera scan and Level 1 or 2 inspection. Our chimney cleaning page covers deeper creosote removal from the firebox, smoke chamber and glass doors.
Will a chimney sweep make a mess in my house?
Not when it is done right. We lay drop cloths from the door to the hearth, seal the opening and run a HEPA vacuum the entire time. Soot is captured at the source.
Is the camera scan really necessary if the flue looks clean?
Yes. Cracked tiles and open mortar joints are invisible from the hearth and the roof. The scan takes minutes and is the only way to confirm the liner is intact. It is included, not an upsell.
When is the best time of year to book?
Late spring through early fall. Schedules open up, the roof is dry and repairs get done before the heating season. October and November are our busiest weeks.
Do you sweep wood stove inserts and furnace flues too?
Yes. Inserts often have to be pulled to reach the liner, and older furnace flues in Cleveland, Lakewood and Parma collect soot and rust scale that restricts draft. Both are priced in the free estimate.
