“David promptly responded to our request for inspection, called when he was en route, and arrived on time. He used a drone to examine the chimney exterior and a camera for the interior, provided a copy of the inspection video, and presented a range of options for prioritizing the repairs. Excellent value, highly recommend!”

What is included
What a chimney inspection includes at each level
NFPA 211 defines three levels of chimney inspection. The right one depends on what changed, what happened and what you need to know. We never sell a Level 2 to someone who needs a Level 1.
- Level 1: for a chimney in regular use with no changes. Readily accessible parts checked for soundness, blockage and deposits. Advised for homeowners who maintain the chimney yearly, and included with our chimney and furnace flue sweeping
- Level 2: everything in Level 1 plus a video scan of the flue and a check of accessible attics and basements for clearance to framing. The cap, crown, flashing, masonry, flue liner, damper, appliance connections, smoke chamber and firebox are each inspected for cracks, leaks and damage. Required at a sale, after a fire or storm, when the appliance or fuel changes, and whenever the chimney noticeably changes how it performs
- Level 3: ordered when a Level 1 or 2 points to a hidden hazard. A component such as the crown or a wall section is removed to reach it
- Flue camera: color video recorded from the firebox to the top, every tile joint visible
- Drone exterior: crown, cap, flashing, chase cover and brick photographed from above, including the side you cannot see from the yard
- Written report: findings by component, photos, video link and a firm price for any repair we recommend

Why it matters
Three inspection levels, one national standard
An inspection is not a guess and a flashlight. NFPA 211 spells out what gets checked at each level, and CSIA certification means the inspector has been tested on it.
Defined by the standard
NFPA 211 defines Level 1, 2 and 3 inspections, each with its own scope, tools and triggers. A technician who cannot tell you which one you are getting is not following the standard.
Source: NFPA 211Required at transfer
NFPA 211 requires a Level 2 at the sale or transfer of a property, after a chimney fire or damaging weather, and whenever the appliance or fuel changes.
Source: NFPA 211Recertification cycle
CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps recertify every three years through examination or continuing education, and agree to a code of ethics enforced by revoking the credential.

When an inspection moves to the top of the list
Some are required by the standard. The rest are common sense where chimneys take a beating from November to April.
Buying or selling a home
A home inspector looks at the chimney from the ground and the hearth. NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 with a video scan at every transfer.
New insert, stove or gas logs
Changing the appliance or fuel changes what the flue handles. The liner has to be checked and sized before the first fire.
After a chimney fire
Even a short one can crack tiles and blow out mortar joints. A Level 2 is required before the chimney is used again.
Stains on the ceiling near the chimney
Water gets in through the crown, the flashing or porous brick. The inspection finds which one before anyone starts patching.
Carbon monoxide alarm or headaches
A blocked or broken flue on a furnace or water heater pushes exhaust back into the house. Treat this as urgent.
More than a year since the last one
The standard is annual regardless of use. A chimney that sat idle still collects nests, leaves and moisture.
Smoke or odor in the room
A smell that was not there last season or smoke that will not draw means something changed inside the flue.
After a big storm or a lightning strike
High wind, hail and lightning can crack crowns, shift caps and loosen flashing without any sign from the ground.
How it works
How the inspection works
Scope the job
A short call settles which level you need and why. Real estate deadlines, a new appliance or a recent event point to Level 2. We schedule seven days a week.
Inside the home
Drop cloths down, then the firebox, damper and smoke chamber are examined and the flue camera runs to the top. Watch the screen as it goes.
Outside and above
The drone flies the crown, cap, flashing and every face of the brick. When hands on access is needed, the technician goes up with proper gear.

Findings are written by component with photos, video and a firm price for anything that needs work. No obligation to use us for the repair.

Why Green and Clean
Why a documented chimney inspection beats a free look
A free inspection is usually a sales visit. A documented one has a standard behind it, footage you keep and a technician whose certification is on the line.
- Certified inspectors: CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, NFI Certified, Certified Chimney Professional
- Reports insurers and agents accept: written to the NFPA 211 level, with evidence attached

Pricing
What changes the price of a chimney inspection
Inspection pricing depends on scope, not on what we hope to find. Three factors set it, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.
Inspection level
A Level 1 is a visual check of accessible areas. A Level 2 adds the video scan, attic check and drone flight. A Level 3 opens part of the structure and is priced after a Level 2 shows it is needed.
Flues and appliances
One fireplace flue is the baseline. A furnace flue, a wood stove insert that has to be pulled or gas logs with their own connection add scope.
Timing and access
Steep or icy roofs, a chimney with no cleanout or a report needed within days of a closing change the scheduling. Say so when you book.

Closing next week and the buyer wants a Level 2?
We schedule real estate inspections quickly across the Cleveland metro, and the written report with video arrives in time for negotiations. Smell gas or exhaust? That is the emergency line, day or night.

FAQ
Chimney inspection questions we hear every week
What is the difference between a Level 1 and a Level 2?
A Level 1 covers the readily accessible parts of the chimney and fits a system that has not changed. A Level 2 adds a video scan of the whole flue plus accessible attics and basements, and is required at a sale, after a fire or storm, or when the appliance changes.
Do I need a Level 2 chimney inspection to sell my house in Ohio?
NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 on any sale or transfer. Ohio does not police it at closing, but buyers, agents and lenders increasingly ask for it. Sellers who order it first avoid a last minute renegotiation.
My home inspector already looked at the chimney. Is that enough?
A general home inspector views the chimney from the ground and shines a light up the firebox. That is not a Level 2, which is why most home inspection reports recommend evaluation by a qualified chimney professional. Our visit is that follow up.
How long does it take?
A Level 1 on a single flue is usually under an hour. A Level 2 with the camera scan, attic check and drone flight runs one to two hours depending on flues and appliances. The written report usually follows the same day.
Do gas fireplaces and furnace flues need inspecting?
Yes. Gas produces water vapor and acids that attack clay tile and mortar from the inside, and a blocked gas flue is a carbon monoxide risk. Furnace and water heater flues in older Cleveland suburbs are some of the most damaged chimneys we see.
What happens if you find a problem?
You get the footage, the photos and a written scope with a firm price for each item, sorted by urgency. There is no obligation to hire us for the repair, and many buyers use the report to negotiate. If the chimney is unsafe, we say so plainly.
