“David promptly responded to our request for inspection, called when he was en route, and arrived on time. He used a drone to examine the chimney exterior and a camera for the interior, provided a copy of the inspection video, and presented a range of options for prioritizing the repairs. Excellent value, highly recommend!”

What is included

Gas fireplace repairs we handle

Most gas fireplace problems come down to a short list of parts and a longer list of skipped cleaning. We take care of both on one visit.

  • Pilot assembly: cleaning, orifice clearing, spark igniter and pilot hood replacement
  • Thermocouple and thermopile: output measured in millivolts and replaced when it drops below spec
  • Gas valves and controls: wall switches, remote receivers, valve solenoids and safety pilot systems
  • Burner cleaning: ports cleared, ember bed refreshed and the log set placed per the factory diagram
  • Venting: direct vent and B vent connections checked for separation, corrosion and correct termination
  • Glass, gaskets and barriers: cracked glass, worn gaskets and missing safety screens replaced
  • Blowers and fan kits: noisy or dead blowers and thermostatic fan switches
  • Leak test at every fitting plus a carbon monoxide reading while the unit runs

Why it matters

Why gas fireplace repair is a safety call, not a convenience

It burns natural gas a few feet from your sofa. When a part fails, the system shuts down. When venting fails, nothing does.

400+deaths a year

Carbon monoxide is the quiet risk

The CDC reports more than 400 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning unrelated to fires. A gas fireplace venting into the room instead of outdoors is one of the ways it happens.

2015barrier rule

The glass gets hotter than an oven door

Since January 2015, ANSI standards require a protective barrier on new gas fireplaces because the glass can pass 400 degrees. Older units without a screen are a burn risk for children and pets.

30millivolts

Why the pilot drops out

A healthy thermocouple produces roughly 25 to 30 millivolts and a thermopile several hundred. When output falls, the valve closes. That safety shutoff is the top reason a pilot will not stay lit.

Warning signs

Eight gas fireplace symptoms and what they usually mean

You can narrow the diagnosis from the couch. We confirm it with a meter.

Pilot will not stay lit

Usually a weak thermocouple or a pilot flame too small to heat it, often from a spider web in the pilot tube after summer.

Pilot lit, burner will not fire

Points to the thermopile, the wall switch or remote, or the valve itself. Millivolt readings tell us which within minutes.

Delayed ignition with a whoomp

Gas is pooling before it lights, usually from blocked burner ports, misplaced logs or a weak pilot. Stop using it until checked.

Soot on the glass or logs

Logs sitting in the flame path, a dirty burner or an air shutter out of adjustment. Soot also means incomplete combustion.

Rotten egg smell

That is the odorant in natural gas. Leave the house, call your gas utility from outside, then call us once the line is confirmed safe.

Headaches or stale air while it runs

A venting problem or a vent free unit in too small a room. We measure carbon monoxide at the appliance and in the room.

White haze that will not wipe off

Mineral deposits baked onto the inside of the glass. Heavy film means the glass needs proper cleaning and the gasket a check.

Blower rattles or never starts

Fan kits collect dust and the thermostatic switch that starts them fails with age. Both are quick repairs.

How it works

How we repair a gas fireplace

01

Symptom and model check

We read the data plate, pull the manual for your unit and listen to what it has been doing.

02

Test, never guess

Millivolt readings on the thermocouple and thermopile, a leak test at every fitting and a look at the venting before any part is replaced.

03

Repair and clean

The failed part is replaced, the burner and pilot are cleaned and the log set goes back exactly per the diagram.

04

Run test and CO reading

The fireplace runs several cycles while we measure carbon monoxide and confirm the flame pattern. You get a written summary.

Pricing

What changes the price of gas fireplace repair

Gas fireplace repair is priced by the part and the labor to reach it. Here is what moves the number, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.

Which part failed

A thermocouple or igniter is a quick swap. A gas valve, a remote receiver or a blower kit costs more and can take longer to source.

Age and brand of the unit

Current models have parts on the shelf. Units from the 1990s sometimes need discontinued parts or a compatible substitute, which we research before quoting.

Cleaning and venting work

Burner cleaning, glass restoration and vent corrections are quoted as their own lines.

Smell gas right now?

Do not touch light switches. Leave the house, call your gas utility from outside, then call us once the line is safe. The emergency line is answered 24/7.

FAQ

Questions we answer daily

Why does my gas fireplace pilot keep going out?

The thermocouple is probably no longer producing enough millivolts to hold the valve open, or the pilot flame is too weak to heat it because the orifice is partly clogged. We test the output and either clean the assembly or replace the part.

The pilot is lit but the burner will not come on. What is wrong?

That is usually the thermopile, which powers the main valve, or the switch and wiring between them. A worn remote receiver causes the same symptom. A meter reading at the valve terminals tells us which it is.

Do you work on all gas fireplace brands?

We service most major brands, including Heat and Glo, Heatilator, Majestic, Napoleon, Regency, Superior and Empire, along with vented and vent free log sets. Tell us the model when you book and we can often bring the part on the first visit.

Is a little soot on the glass normal?

No. A properly adjusted gas fireplace burns clean. Soot means a log is sitting in the flame path, the burner ports are partly blocked or the air mixture is off. It is also a sign of incomplete combustion, so book a service call rather than a wipe down.

Is it safe to run a vent free gas fireplace?

Vent free units are safe when sized for the room, kept clean and used for short periods. They need a working oxygen depletion sensor and a carbon monoxide alarm nearby. We test the sensor and tell you if the unit is too large for the space.

What does gas fireplace repair cost?

It depends on the failed part, the age and brand of the unit and whether cleaning or venting work is needed. You get a firm written price before any repair begins, and the estimate is free. Book online or call.
